I have struggled to understand for a lot of my life of when to go HARD and GRIND and when to take it slow and let opportunities, relationships, money come to me. I’m still figuring it out, believe me. And there have been times where I feel I’m running and going nowhere and then other times when I’m doing almost nothing and just jump forward with little to no effort. The question is – how do I know when to do what?! I definitely don’t have all the answers, but I do have a few questions I ask myself –
Why am I taking the actions I’m taking? Am I taking actions out of fear? Out of worry that I’m not where I’m supposed to be and need to get there faster? Because I need to control the situation? Or is it because I’m curious? I want to see what possibilities are out there. Curious as to how this project (or whatever) I’m working on will turn out when I’m done.
Am I present when taking the actions? Am I really IN IT when I’m doing the work? Or am I constantly thinking about the past and how I’ve messed up? Or thinking about the future and how I don’t think I’ll ever get to where I want to? I think you can look at the future when you’re taking action, but it must be with a positive and optimistic outlook. What you are doing now will create a better future for yourself, not one where you constantly have to take action because you are feeling behind.
Why do you think you need to take action? Are you taking action because that’s what society says you should do? “Always grind, never rest. If you’re watching Netflix or scanning your social feed, you’re lazy!” Or maybe you’re taking action because a friend or family member told you that’s what you need to do. Here’s a tip, if that person has not been to the place you want to be, don’t take advice from them. That may sound harsh. No offense, but if I want a six pack, I want a personal trainer who has a six pack. (P.S. I was a personal trainer and never had a 6 pack.) That doesn’t mean other personal trainers are bad, but they don’t know what a six pack takes or feels like from first hand experience. If you need to take action, make sure it’s from a place of investment. You need to take action NOW because you are investing this current time for a better future. You may think you NEED to get it done just because it’s on your checklist, but think of it as an investment. Take it from me – someone who pushes to-do lists away constantly. When I change my mindset into an investment mind, I feel great about doing my work.
How do the actions I’m taking fit into the grand scheme of my life? Do they align with my goals? What is the end goal I want? Is it a means to an end? It could possibly be and that’s ok, but what’s the end look like? Also ask this when you’re taking into consideration other priorities you have in your life. If the actions you want to take or are taking DON’T get done, will it be the end of the world? Do they even HAVE to be done? Maybe you’re putting an invisible standard on your life that’s not meant to be there. It can be a huge sigh of relief when you realize some tasks can be let go of and now you have time to focus on other tasks or chill time.
I hope these self-reflection questions help you! I know I’ve been in too many situations and have wasted too many hours because I pressured myself into taking action that didn’t even need to be on my agenda. Get clear on what you want your end goal to be, stay calm cool and collect, and you will be able to see what you really need to do.
Everything you need to know is within! I’m just here to help point it out. Go within!!!!
