I used to think I was special. Walking down the sidewalks of Los Angeles, I dreamed of having the classic Hollywood story:
Them: “Oh my goodness, are YOU an actress?! If not, you should be! You’re beautiful and I haven’t even heard you speak and know nothing about you, but you seem hilarious. Hi, I’m Steven Spielberg.”

Ahh… wouldn’t that be nice?
Through consistent self-abandonment, day dreaming, and hopefulness, I found myself nowhere, no one, and 10 years older.
While that may seem harsh, along with the title stating You Are Not Special; it’s real.
Let’s take those people with 6 packs. Do they have better genetics than those who don’t have a 6 pack?
Maybe.
But are they special?
Absolutely not.
These people still go workout even when they don’t feel like it. They still watch what they eat even if they want a tub of Ben & Jerry’s. They still follow a routine even if they want to watch TV and chill.
They’re not special, they just do the work that is required for them to have a 6 pack.
Same with someone who wants to build a business. Could one person have more experience, more money, or more resources than another?
Yes, absolutely that happens. But both people STILL have to do the work to grow a business.
Maybe that’s making Canva graphics or maybe that’s hiring someone who can make those Canva graphics.
Either way, whatever step someone is on, they cannot be skipped. They do not magically disappear from the to-do list.
The problem for a lot of people when first starting something is that the consistency is absolutely boring and you have no idea if anything is working.
What’s exciting and gives you a giant spike of dopamine?
Simply the idea of being picked out of the crowd by Steven Spielberg.
What’s not as exciting and takes more willpower than ease?
Showing up everyday to make Canva graphics, create SOPs, DM people, write a blog, post on social media.
Trust me, I don’t wake up jumping up and down excited to do my work.
But maybe that was never the point.
Maybe the point was never to be so excited to work you pee your pants.
Maybe the point was to be a calm steward who is completely present in the work in front of you.
Because even if Spielberg had come up to me before I had adopted a calm, steward, and present identity – I absolute would’ve peed my pants.
And Spielberg notoriously doesn’t let pants pee-ers in his movies (so I’ve heard).
Are you special in the way that you have something to offer that no one else can – and that’s to be authentically you?
Yes, absolutely.
Are you special in the way that you can skip all the work and get to the dream?
Sorry to tell ya, nope.
From me to you:
So what are you waiting for? Stop dreaming and start doing the work.
I’m curious, what kind of work have you been avoiding starting or becoming consistent with? Leave a comment!
Til next time,
Shay
