Mastering Consistency with Evan Ruiz – 5 Years Later

Written by:

Five years ago, I sat down with Evan Ruiz (Zoom life) – athlete, personal trainer, and one of the most grounded and driven people I know – to talk about the not-so-sexy, often overlooked key to success: consistency.

Back then, I was just starting to understand how powerful consistency really is. We always talk about it like it’s this elusive trait that some people just “have.” But the truth is, consistency is a skill – and like any skill, it has to be practiced, nurtured, and protected.

In our conversation, Evan broke it down with the kind of honesty and realness that sticks with you.

We dug into the mindset blocks, the emotional resistance, and why mobility is more important than a six-pack (yep, she said it and she’s right).

Evan shares how she learned to trust her gut, how she built a client base without chasing people down, and why the phrase “discipline equals freedom” isn’t just a quote — it’s a lifestyle.

And interestingly enough, she says something that hit me hard when I first heard it, but resonated with me differently this time around.

“If you like it, you won’t have to force it. But if you don’t, you’ll never stick with it.”

See, five years ago I was all about hard core discipline. I would create schedules to wake up before the world at 5am, work all day, and go to bed late just to get “ahead.” Then inevitably, I would burn out.

I would miss a 5am alarm, eat poorly, or be on edge and consequently, be more hard on myself than ever before.

But now that I’ve developed more compassion and wisdom about how I work best and what I truly want out of life, I see this differently.

I kept burning out because I wasn’t loving what I was doing. It was more from a place of needing rather than wanting.

I needed to tolerate the work, push harder, prove myself, feel like I was important and do more than anyone else because I needed to get somewhere other than where I was – faster.

Now, I’ve realized it doesn’t have to be like that!

It is possible to “sleep in” (7-8am) and be successful.

It is possible to work on things you love, don’t do things you don’t like and be successful.

And it is possible to slow down, have compassion for myself and be successful.

Now, five years later, I’ve relaunched this episode in video form on my YouTube channel. Because her message? Still hits. Maybe harder (and in a different way) now than ever.
