Awareness, Space & Decision
My life has been a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts lately. After 10 years of living on my own in Los Angeles & Atlanta, I have moved back to my childhood home living with my parents.
And while it sounds like I’ve leveled down, this is the most challenged I’ve felt in a long time to level up and take control of my life.
It doesn’t matter where you’re at in your life, whether it’s the beginning of a 10 year journey, the middle of the lowest part of your life, or you’re in the golden age of your life – when you are pushed to the limits, invited to expand your comfort zone, your brain does its usual thing.
BRAIN: “Whoa hey, what are you doing? Whoa hey, you’re out there doing big things, what’s this all about? Whoa hey, you’re not qualified for this, why don’t you sit back, relax, and stay safe instead?”
Imposter syndrome to the MAX! (Anyone else? ✋🏻)
The good news is, level 1 or level 10, the same process applies to get through it.

Awareness, Space, Decision
This is the process I use when my imposter syndrome starts to creep in.
1. Awareness
Your brain, which creates your thoughts, was created to do one thing. Keep you safe. It started when you were a child. Maybe you were a toddler on your way up the staircase and your mom caught you “Get down from there! You’ll get hurt!”
Maybe it’s your teacher who discouraged you from speaking up in class “If you don’t know the answer, Johnny, don’t speak!” And because your brain is a sponge as you grow up, it doesn’t forget those thoughts, it ingrains them. So now, as an adult, you question yourself when speaking up and you’re afraid to do uncomfortable things because you’ve always been told to stay safe.
Here’s the thing – your thoughts are not YOUR lived experience. They are patterns created by years of listening to others. But you can change them to align with the kind of life you desire to live and create. When these unhelpful, critical, imposter thoughts arise, step back and become aware of them.
2. Space
Creating space between yourself and your thoughts allows you to move through emotions instead of getting stuck in them. Remember, it’s not just your thoughts that are deep in your subconscious. It’s also your emotions. Your emotions are actually the source of your thoughts and when you think those same thoughts, it further ingrains the emotion.
Think of it this way – you go to ask someone out and they say no. You instantly FEEL rejected. And then the flood of thoughts come along – “Why would I do that?” “I knew they didn’t like me.” “That was so stupid.” “I’ll never be loved.” And that further ingrains the EMOTION of being unsafe and unlovable.
How do we stop this vicious cycle? We take action to get those emotions out – journal, meditate, run, kick, scream, therapy and other helpful activities. We are not a brain with a body, we are a body with a brain. Get your body moving!
Decision
Once you recognize these thoughts and emotions and release them, choose to think differently. Choose to take action despite the fear. Decide that you will no longer allow your past (which was decided for you) will no longer continue and you are dedicated to creating a new life for yourself.
It can happen. You can do it.
If this resonates with you, imagine having a structured way to build confidence and push past self-doubt. Join my course today and let’s start leveling up together!
