Life is Lived in Every Moment – Not Just the ‘Big’ Ones

Written by:

I love those big moments in life. You too, right?

(Psst. This is part of an email series I send out every Tuesday. Sign up here!)

The ones we anxiously wait for and are excited about. Constantly glancing at the calendar and clock as a reminder of how close – or far away – we are from that big moment!

As we probably all know and have experienced, the time eventually passes, the big moment happens and then we look forward to when the next big moment will be. The next time we’ll hang out with our friends, or travel, or, shoot, just the next time we’ll get out of the house!

These “big” moments are great, but truly, most of the time our life is not filled with big moments. Our time is mostly taken up by “little” moments.

Getting out of bed, going through our morning routine, exercise, preparing and cooking meals for the day, work, meetings, leisure, and then back to bed.

Since the year has started, and even before then, that was what most of my days looked like.

The days when I had plans, I would wake up excited and ready to get to them!

Some of those days would be very enjoyable because I’d be in such a great mood while looking forward to the evening. And other times I would be sluggish just WAITING for the time to come to get out of the house.

I finally came to a realization…

This isn’t what life is supposed to be like.

At least my life.

I’m not supposed to WAIT to experience good feelings or have an attachment to plans with the idea that they will give me the good feelings I was craving.

I wanted to experience good feelings every moment of every day.

You may say “Shay, that’s just not possible. Feeling good ALL the time? What if we feel bad sometimes?”

To that, I say two things:
1. Your negative emotions and feelings are just as valid as your positive ones.
2. If you do not strive for the ‘impossible’ to become the possible, it will never be true for you.

Philosopher Renee Descartes said “I think, therefore I am”.

And along those same lines, Henry Ford said “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t – you’re right”.

When I started to sprinkle good feelings on every moment I met, my days went from…

bleak to bright,
slow to swift,
depressed to revitalized!

I would sit at my computer working and say to myself “I love doing this. It brings me so much joy. Thank you”.

Or while eating “I love giving my body this nutritious food that fuels it to perform well”!

Or as I’m taking a shower “Wow I love the smell of this soap. It makes me feel calm, fresh and clean”!

As I continued to go throughout my days with this awareness of the availability of joy that surrounded me, I found that time passed so quickly! And if I had plans later that day, they came before I even realized it.

And the plans I had felt even BETTER because the momentum of joy created during the day with those ‘little’ moments, carried into the ‘big’ moments of the night.

Before I leave today, I do want to say this…

I’ve used the terms ‘big’ and ‘little’ to describe moments and to emphasize what I was feeling, but in truth, no moment is bigger than any other. You are still in the present moment, still in your body and mind. Any moment you label as ‘big’ is a result of your ego thinking it is more important than the others. And by doing so, you trample all of the ‘little’ moments and forget the immense importance of them.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the rat race of life that we forget to remember that each moment matters.

Life can be grand and magical in all moments.

It takes awareness, willingness, and practice and I know for sure that you are worthy and capable of an incredibly joyful life.

“A happy life is just a string of happy moments. But most people don’t allow the happy moment, because they’re so busy trying to get a happy life.” – Esther Hicks

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!

Til next week…
