How often do you show your Self-Love?

Written by:

Think with me for a moment – When was the last time you took a moment to feel immense love for yourself?

(Psst. This is part of an email series I send out every Tuesday. Sign up here!)

A time when you acknowledged how worthy you are, how proud you are of your life, the countless number of positive attributes you bring to the world.

Do you remember?

I’ve found through books, teachings, and many personal experiences that one of the main reasons we hold ourselves back, live below our potential, don’t go for what we want in life is for one reason – a lack of self-love.

Marianne Williamson says “Everything we do is either an act of love or a cry for help.”

I have been a part of a Law of Attraction group held by my friend Timothy for the past few weeks and it has been such a joyful experience.

One truth I’ve learned  – or rather have been reminded of – is that the Universe is made up of love. That is the Universal truth, the truth of God or whatever you believe in.

In this group, we have started a very powerful exercise where you write yourself a Love Letter for 33 days in a row.

So in the midst of my morning routine, I sit down for about 10 minutes and write myself a love letter.

I say things like “I’m so proud of you. You are worthy. You do not have to prove your worth through work and action. You are worthy either way.”

It completely takes me out of the pattern of “self-hate” and allows love to flow through me.

If you were here last week, you know what I mean when I say that doing this helps create new neural pathways in which to live.

In all honesty, I have developed habits of waking up in the morning and remembering all the things from the day before that went wrong, what I didn’t do enough of, how I worked so much and didn’t even touch what I REALLY wanted to get to – basically, a whole bunch of negative memories.

So with this self-love letter exercise, I am able to take those negative thoughts that wake up with me in the morning and do two things (and in this order):

1. Send love to them and let them go.
2. Imagine what I want to see in my future.

We can get so down on ourselves for not being perfect. And while perfection is an illusion based on comparison, we still strive to be better than we were before.

Do you know what’s NOT going to help us be better?

Dwelling on the past. Past mistakes, past bad experiences, past errors in thinking.

And what do we know about the past?

You can’t go back and change it. And in reality, it’s all in your mind (and possibly body, but I recommend seeing a therapist for that!).

So with the incredible power of your mind, you have the option to, again:

1. Send love to those memories and let them go.
2. Imagine what you want to see in your future.

I had a word for the year 2021 and that was ‘self-love’. I learned so much about how to love myself – mostly through being aware of how I wasn’t loving myself – and I’m so excited to be continuing this journey into 2022.

I think we all could use a little more love for ourselves. And I strongly believe it is a purpose of mine on this Earth to share my journey of what that looks like because it might encourage others to love themselves more as well.

The more we love ourselves, the more ability we have to love others.

And wouldn’t that be nice? A world in which we love each other?

Sounds like heaven.

It may be difficult to summon all the love you want to have for yourself at one time so it’s nice to know that it is all a process. A little bit a day. One step at a time.

I’ll leave you with this…

“We cannot change the past, but we can change our attitude toward it. Uproot guilt and plant forgiveness. Tear our arrogance and seed humility. Exchange love for hate – thereby, making the present comfortable and the future promising.”
