What is going on?! Welcome back to Level Up! With Shay Season 2. Today’s lesson I was just thinking about it right before i jumped on here…I was going to say it’s the biggest, it’s the most prevalent lesson that I’ve learned thus far but I think there are so many that I can’t even say this is the biggest lesson, but it’s still a huge lesson, an important lesson.
But before I get into that, I felt like I just dove right in there – how are you guys? Are you good? I see you’re on here to make yourself better and maybe to hear some words that will help you level up, right? That is the point of this show is to help you level up, whether it’s in relationships, your money, your career, vacations – I don’t know how you want to level up. Maybe going from an AirBnb to a resort – maybe that’s a level up. Depends what you like but you’re here because you want to level up.
So now I’m gonna get right into our lesson for the day –
Small steps.
Keep moving.
Okay? That’s the motto. Small steps, keep moving. It’s not too catchy, but it’s simple and you know what to do. Small steps. Take small steps and keep moving. Keep going and don’t stop. There’s momentum to this game. To leveling up. And you gotta keep it moving. I wanna share with you a quote from Will Smith, which you may have heard before because it is a pretty big quote.
“Greatness is not this wonderful esoteric, elusive god-like feature that only the special among us will ever taste. It’s something that truly exists in all of us.”
Thank you, Will. You give me hope. Will Smith is one of the biggest movie stars ever to walk this Earth so he knows what’s up. And it’s not just Will Smith who knows this. I follow so many entrepreneurs, artists and personal development speakers and they know that this ability to succeed is within all of us.
We have to know that. We have to also believe that. But ‘how do we get to this greatness?’ is the question. How do we do this? Well, it’s so simple. And all these lessons that I share with you, you’ve probably heard them in some form or another before. That’s because the rules are simple to this game of success. We just have to be disciplined. Am I the most disciplined person ever? No, but i’m learning and I’m getting better at what’s important to me. What I need to be disciplined about and what I need to give myself grace for. So it’s all a process but how do we uncover that greatness inside of us? I think we take small steps each day and keep moving. It seems pretty simple, some of you may have heard it before and therefore maybe didn’t listen so I’m going to say it again –
We create the amazing life we want by taking small steps each day and we keep moving.
Well we all know this, right? In order to build a house, they don’t come in with a frame already and
the workers just plop it on the land and it’s done. They have to lay it brick by brick. It happens around us like that all day, every day. Little steps. A tree doesn’t get mad that it’s not a hundred feet tall – I don’t know what kind of trees are 100 feet tall but there are some, I know – when they’re just starting out. You know it’s little by little. They don’t worry about that. But us as humans, we worry about that because we have brains so it’s just harder. But it’s so fulfilling when you do put that work in each and every day and then you come across an opportunity that’s like “Oh I’m ready for this! I’m ready for this because I’ve prepared, even if it’s just a little bit, but every day I’ve made decisions to put me in the place that I am now. I just posted on the Level Up! With Shay Instagram (@levelupwithshay) on St. Patrick’s Day
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
Seneca
So you see all of these actors or comedians or musicians and you think “Oh my gosh that was an overnight success!” Right? You’ve always heard of that, but you didn’t see the work that went into it. They were preparing. So when it was that time that Big Sean met Kanye West, who I’m thinking of specifically right now, for him to freestyle, he was ready for it. And then he eventually got signed and he is who he is today because of those small actions [Sidenote: Just listened to the interview with Big Sean on Jay Shetty’s podcast “On Purpose” and when Big Sean met Kanye, he had the CDs ready, his artist bio, possibly some business cards. He had everything ready as if he could be signed that day! Really great podcast. You can listen to it HERE].
It’s all of this preparation before, it’s all these small steps, it’s all these decisions to say “Hey I’m going to step out of my comfort zone right now. I’m going to push myself a little bit further and I’m going to say no to partying or doing something late because I have to get up in the early in the morning because I made a promise to myself that I would take these little steps every day. And at some point, I want to be in this position, in this vision that I have for myself.” So small steps and keep moving.
I follow the author of Atomic Habits James Clear and I’m gonna plug him because he has a newsletter that I get every Thursday and it’s called the 3-2-1 Newsletter. It has three ideas from him, which are so brilliant, two quotes from other people and one question and it just blows my mind every week. I love seeing it come in my inbox – like, it’s seriously a present. So go check that out. I’m not even sponsored by him or anything, but fantastic newsletter James Clear, author of Atomic Habits [Find it HERE].
Anyway, in Atomic Habits, he talks about why we need habits and the best ways to create better and longer lasting habits and one quote from the book says
“All big things come from small beginnings. The seed of every habit is a single tiny decision.”
James Clear
Just think about it. What kind of decisions do you make every day? You make a decision to stay on
social media longer. Or shorter, it doesn’t have to be bad. You made the decision to go to a friend’s show and show support. You make these tiny decisions and hopefully they’re for you, but either way, you can see where your life is now. You can see what type of decisions you’ve made in the past that have led up to now.
Just an easy example – how do you feel? How does your body feel? You can tell how you have been treating yourself in the past with your decisions based on how you feel today. Because if how you feel now is bad, you’d be like “Oh yeah from eating all of those cheeseburgers, eating all that pizza, drinking all that alcohol. Yes that makes sense that I don’t feel well right now.” What decisions have you been making and what are some decisions that you want to change moving forward? Reflection will help you. Again, the seed of every habit is a single, tiny decision. It’s a tiny decision! We just need to make the ones that are for us and for our goals and our dreams.
For example, when you start to diet, there are all these things that come along with dieting – buying
healthy groceries, stop going out to dinner, stop eating certain foods. There are these extra things that you do when you’re on a diet but the first thing you have to do is you have to make a decision. It’s a tiny decision. We build these decisions up to be huge because of things that we’re going to lose, right? All of these things that I knew and are comfortable with are being taken away from me. I’m not able to go out with my friends, I’m not able to eat chocolate, whatever it is. It builds it up to this huge decision because of what’s going to happen in the future but the decision is so tiny. The decision is so small. And the next decision I’ll make to buy spinach and rice instead of chips is a tiny decision. The “going on a diet” decision is so big because it includes buying rice instead of chips and we’re also including the fact that we’re taking away chips and now I gotta eat this nasty rice. But it’s all just one tiny decision after another.
Tiny, daily decisions will exponentially change your future.
You may not think about it now, but think 10 years down the road if you keep on making the decisions you make today how will your life turn out? Think about five years prior and how your life is now. Ask yourself that.
So I will say this, small steps happen now. What is it you want to accomplish in the next year by 2022? Start the small steps now! It’s like getting a research paper assignment at the beginning of the semester and it’s due at the end of the semester. You’re welcome to work on it throughout the semester. There are those people who do it little by little and then there are those people who wait last minute and are staying up overnight to finish their paper that’s been available to them all semester. I know I waited till last minute. That was the only time I drank coffee in college, when I had a paper due and I stayed up all night to finish it. The paper now represents my freaking life. It represents your life! It represents your biggest goals and your biggest dreams! It’s not just a grade anymore, it’s your life. It’s your legacy – the footprint that you will leave in the world. So you should be excited about it! You have the opportunity by being alive right now to do something amazing and great and something that was meant just for you. Seriously, nobody else is meant to do the thing that you are supposed to be doing. Nobody else. And I don’t care if someone else is in the same profession – actor, musician, etc. –
“The impact that you make in the world isn’t just through your art or your business or your passions, it’s your day-to-day life.”
The interactions that you have with people, that’s the footprint that you leave in the world. There’s a flow to everything. How you treat one person matters because possibly, it’s the one out of 100 people that you meet that gives you the opportunity of a lifetime to live your dream and live the life that you want! And if you’re mean and crappy to that person then chances are you’re not gonna have some good opportunities in the future. (P.S. Even if the person has nothing to give you, no opportunities, money, etc. you should still be kind 🙂 ). This opportunity to live your life is yours and yours only! No one else can do what you do.
So take small steps today.
Ask yourself and write it down: “What are one to three things I can do today to move my vision forward?”
One to three things and small steps. Just stop at one if you want, that’s fine! Write them down and take action. That’s it. Action, action, action, action! So key!!
I am here right next to you doing exactly what I am sharing. I appreciate you listening to this and I truly hope that you think of one, two, three years down, the road five years down the road, what you want to accomplish and start making necessary changes now. If you feel like you’re putting in enough action, then meditate more.
Get a closer relationship with your spiritual connection.
That is what’s going to raise you to the highest.
