This is Level Up! With Shay, Season 2! Welcome!
You know, I’ve been putting this off of just doing this first episode just because I want it to be perfect, right? But this is me. This is me this is raw, this is real and I’m happy to be doing it. Sometimes when you’re like
“I’m supposed to be the voice that people enjoy listening to!” and then you’re like “But what if I forget what i’m saying?” or “What if i don’t have anything to say?” Sometimes i go off on tangents that don’t go anywhere. But I’m gonna do it! A good friend of mine said a few weeks ago to just make sh*t. Just make stuff. If it’s bad, you learn from it, you get feedback. She said make shit. And I think she got that from Gary V who is a guy that I listen to quite often. I see him on every social media platform and he just doesn’t give a crap about excuses. He just believes that you should make what you can make. So that’s what I’m going to do. Make sh*t.
Anyway, I just started talking and didn’t introduce you to Season 2 of Level Up! With Shay! I didn’t even know I was going to start that way, but it just kind of flowed into it and I think it’s an important message, again, to make sh*t and do what you can do. Because I know so many times I’ve just put “it” off and then I’ve lost time and then I’m like “I don’t have enough time to do this other thing!” when the reality is “No, you did but you remember when you looked at social media for hours upon hours? Yeah, that was the time that you were avoiding the thing you were supposed to be doing.” So many things I could go on forever about, but I’m here to talk about one specific thing today – the voices in your head.
I took some time off from October to now (and it’s March right now) and I’m just getting settled into Atlanta moving from Los Angeles where I lived for almost five years. Just trying to connect and network and create with awesome people out here. So I’m excited to bring Level Up! back in my life because I think this is a chance not only for me to give these people platforms who I’m meeting – I’m meeting incredible people out here in Atlanta – and I want to know their secrets and I want to give a platform to share those secrets as
to how they’ve leveled up. But also I feel like I need another go-around of some leveling up. Which, all leveling ups basically answer the same questions, but just through different experiences. And you never know when one thing that one person says is going to start a fire in you. I know that’s happened to me with different podcasters, different personal development experts or just anybody whose shared wisdom from their experience. I think, truly, that’s what we’re here for is to gain wisdom through our perspective, our singular perspective, because we’re literally the only one of us. So take advantage of your perspective and your situation! uh but yeah
I’m very excited about today’s topic – the voices in your head. You have two voices in your head. You have the little voice in your head that’s like “oh my gosh that thing, that idea that you just had, that sounds so fun, that sounds so cool! I would love to do that!” That’s one voice. The second voice is…everybody knows it…say it with me…one, two, three – ego! Did you say it? The ego is the second voice. That is the voice that’s telling you “you suck!”, “nobody’s gonna like that idea”, “Who are you you? You’re just this small person who only has 500 followers on social media, 1000 followers, 50,000 followers – whatever! You don’t have those millions!” So your ego is in your head selling you all that crap and depending on how you’ve trained yourself you believe it or you don’t believe it.
That’s what leveling up is all about because at one point you’ll believe that you’re not worthy of money and then that could change. But then you need to focus on being worthy in relationships and then you level up in that area. So it’s just multiple leveling ups, it’s not all at once so just give yourself some grace with that. But again it depends who we have been trained to listen to – the little voice or the ego.
If we’ve been trained to think “Oh that’s a good idea. Yeah, yeah, I hear you ego. I hear you saying that I’ll suck, that the situation will suck, but I know the truth. You are here to throw me off.” And we have different ideas of why the ego is here – it’s to push us even further or to keep us safe. For example, I tried stand-up comedy and my ego didn’t want me to face those fears of being made fun of or telling a joke that doesn’t get a laugh – which has happened in just those few times of trying it. So our ego wants us to be safe, but we would never grow! If we just continue to stay safe we never grow and we never level up. We have to face those fears. And that little voice knows that you can because the little voice also knows the truth – that the ego serves a purpose, but not the purpose of you growing if you listen to it. The little voice stays with you because it knows that you’re worthy and knows that you’re capable of doing whatever you want to do. That’s why you get so many good ideas out of nowhere! It’s because the little voice in your head believes that you can actually make that idea come to life and it knows that you’re worthy.
So which are we gonna choose? We can be a prisoner of our mind or we can be free. We can be free!
I wanted to share an example of this…I make music and I had an idea to do an IG live performing some new music of mine and as soon as that little idea came through, my little voice was like “Oh my gosh, that sounds so fun! I’ve never done that before, so it’s kind of scary. I’ve been on IG live but not with my music, which is kind of new to me within the past few years but i love music. So my little voice was like “Yes. This is awesome. Do it. This is new. This is going to push boundaries for you, you’re going to face your fears. And then the ego came in – hey buddy – and said “But you suck though,” “You know nobody’s gonna show up. Why would anybody? Don’t do it, that seems scary. But I knew the truth. I was aware that this was an awesome idea and then as soon as i said that my ego was like “nah.” So the first step is being aware of it, right? Because some people just believe it. Some people just believe that, yeah they do suck, yeah people won’t be on their IG live. But when i i explained this situation to one of my friends, she made a great point…
P.S. It’s so nice and almost necessary to have people you trust who you can share these things to because I wouldn’t go around telling everybody this, but definitely people I trust and are possibly going through the same thing or have already.
Anyway, my friend had some great advice. I told her that my ego showed up and told me I sucked and that no one would show up to my IG live performance and that it would be awful and embarrassing and she responded with “Well you can prepare for all of that being true…” Whoa. So me sucking? Who knows…I might not be perfect. No one showing up? Yeah that’s definitely a possibility. I do IG lives now with two or three people – I love them! – but still, no one could show up to this one. All of this could be true. So what’s gonna happen if I do it and that’s all true? Was it worth it? Hell yeah it was worth it because I actually did it! Everyone has to start from somewhere, right? You have to start laying one brick down and then a second brick down and a third, etc. And some of it may suck , but I know that if it isn’t physically hurting me I can get through it.
I don’t know about you, but I’m a very visceral person in the fact that if I see something on TV, like a stabbing or someone getting shot, I feel it in my body. But in reality, it starts and is all in my mind. These things can’t physically hurt me. If somebody gets stabbed on TV, that doesn’t hurt me physically, but it goes into my mind as if it’s real life. So remember, it all starts in your mind. If nobody shows up to your IG live you don’t have to go to the hospital because you’re in physical pain. You can push through anything with mental strength.
So I was so grateful that she said “Well prepare for all of that to be true” to me. And, I get it, that’s not necessarily being optimistic but it’s being realistic; a really grounded way to think. Sometimes I think I’m gonna try to get 200 people on this IG live and it’s like… just do it. Just do IT! Because you can’t control everything…which runs into my next point…
You have to focus on what you can control.
I can’t control the outcome. I can’t control if 200 people show up if one person shows up or even if no one shows up. Ican promote it. I can post about it, talk about it, tell my friends, but at the end of the day I can only control what I bring to the table myself. Showing up for people who are there or who may watch the video later, my voice, my art, my entertainment. So if I’m only focused on that and having a good time then the pressure is off. It’s kind of like this podcast, right? If I feel from my heart that I’m sharing the right things that I think people can relate to through my real life experience then I did what I could. Maybe I said a couple words here and there that hit some people or maybe I didn’t, but i’m focusing on what i can bring to the table.
So for anyone you know who has big dreams and big goals, which I’d say is the majority of the people listening to this – whether this big dream or big goal is a ton of money or a life of their dreams – you need to know these things. I know people who travel all the time for their life, for their work; it doesn’t have to equate to a ton of money but they do what they love. They aren’t living a life less than their potential. The ego voice will always be there, but the little voice is always there too. So really focus on that! On that smaller tiny, tiny child voice – that’s your younger, child self! – the one who didn’t fear anything! They are speaking to you. I can feel that for myself too. You have to be able to decipher the two and that comes through training. Meditate on it, talk to a friend (again, make sure someone you trust and you should be good to go). It comes through practice.
And other than that, remember that as you level up, focus on what you can control. It seems so cliche because it’s so true!!! I’ve wasted so much time focusing on how other people are reacting to me and my work. It’s LITERALLY a waste of time! Put your blinders on and move forward. Blinders that keep you from the haters, the negative talk, negative friends and family members, distractions, etc. Do your work and keep going. It’s simple but it’s not easy, right? I’m saying simple words – “Yeah, if I want to lose weight I need to eat more vegetables and fruit and less fast food, I get it. But sometimes I want McDonald’s. Sometimes I need a double cheeseburger. But if you want that “thing” it’ll be simple but it’s not going to be easy.
But I believe in you because I believe in myself! I believe we all have the ability to get what we want, achieve what we want and just freaking level up! You know what I’m saying?
