3 Life Lessons From Paul Forchione

Written by:

Mindset coach Paul Forchione shared so many valuable lessons this past week on the Level Up! With Shay podcast and I’d like to share my three favorite! Enjoy!

1. Fail on your own terms

Be confident, live to have no regrets, and if you fail, at least you tried
Before Paul became a Mindset Coach, he had a very successful career as a mortgage loan officer. When a motivational speaker came and visited Paul’s work place, he was very intrigued by the idea of being a coach. He finally made the decision to leave his stable, well-paying job to get certified as a life coach and finally help people the way he wanted to. People called him out for being a little crazy leaving his safe job to go start from scratch as a coach. He knew that if he didn’t try it then, he never would. So he didn’t listen to the naysayers, got his certification, and is now winning on his own terms. And he says at least if he fails, it’s because he put himself out there to do something he felt deemed the risk.

I think people, mostly friends and family, really need to support each other and their dreams. We all have such different aspirations. Even if your parents are doctors, you could still want to become a painter, a dancer, an archeologist. It doesn’t matter where you come from, there is a purpose and a yearning inside of you that will lead you to fulfilling your purpose. The worst thing you could do is ignore that calling. So when people leave their stable situations to take a risk and do something they love, they are called out for it instead of supported! But whether you are supported or not, and you fail, at least you will fail knowing that you tried and didn’t stay small and run away.

2. Be present

“The most important thing is what I’m doing right now.”

Paul mentioned the Mr. Rogers movie with Tom Hanks, which I have not seen, but he remembers one line where Mr. Rogers is talking on the phone with this reporter. The reports is all over the place, looking for papers, and Mr. Rogers says “The most important thing I’m doing is talking on the phone with you”. I don’t know if that stopped the reporter in his tracks, but it stopped Paul in his. He loved that moment because it was just a small glimpse of how importance presence is in the world.

Anything that is not present and in the head is a worry, a plan, a fantasy, etc. – nothing of importance in this moment, unless you’re using it. But don’t let it use you! On my drive from Los Angeles to Atlanta, I listened to The Power of Now. If you haven’t I highly recommend it. It cuz through all the crap – all the thoughts, worries, judgments – and shows what living, feeling, tasting, touching, seeing in the present really means. Our world is filled with abundance but when we tend to step out of the present moment, it kind of gets narrowly focused on your life. And news flash, your life isn’t any bigger than anyone elses. Interesting, right?

3. If you can believe, you can achieve

Find your unique ability, what you’re good at, harness it, build on it, and you can achieve whatever you want!

What is so interesting about Paul’s unique ability is that it came from a tough upbringing of living with cerebral palsy and getting made fun of at school and in sports. He has found that his unique ability is to help people through his story. And that’s about as unique as your can get. No matter if we put him side by side with another boy with cerebral palsy, their lives and stories would still be completely different. Paul knows, because he’s done it before, that whatever you think you can do, you can do! Although, it doesn’t stop there. Get the idea in your mind, believe you can achieve your goal, and get better everyday at whatever skill you need to move forward.

There really is an enormous difference between knowing that you have the ability to do something and the actually believe you can achieve something. You know those people who are like “Well yeah, I could’ve played professional sports but…”? Those people know they have (or had) the ability to do something, but somewhere along the lines, they never really believed they could actually pursue and achieve the thing they wanted. But you can! You can do it all! You won’t have all the answers on how to do it NOW! But start working towards your goal and the answers will come. Believe me.
