Reminder: Celebrate the Little Successes

Written by:

I’m lying on my friends bed in her guest room of her house after driving for 16+ hours today from Los Angeles to Midland, TX on my way to my final destination, Atlanta, GA. If you read my previous blog post, you already know most of this. I made the decision to move to Atlanta a few weeks ago and was excited to get out there, find a place, find a job, or some way to make an income, make connections, and get settled in. And then one of my friends a couple days after I decided and announced to a friend group, she said, “Well just take your time and enjoy the drive out there. Don’t just do it to get there. Have so fun along the way”. It kind of took me aback considering I’m a go-go-go person, I want to get it over with. Driving 32 hours by yourself isn’t something you really look forward to. Man, was I wrong…

I listened to some great music – meaning 70% of NSYNC’s songs, 70% of Trey Songz songs, and other old, random songs – I listened to an awesome episode of The Ed Mylett Show with Maria Menosuo, and listened to a couple audio books, “You Can’t Get There From Here” by… and “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. If you want to see how much you don’t focus, trying listening to The Power of Now while you’re cross-country road tripping. I hit the back 30 seconds button so many times. But wow, was it powerful.

Now, before I go any further, I want to make it clear that I’m not making my Level Up! Blog a diary for myself, but I’m really just documenting this pretty possible life-changing event in my life. And I feel when someone does something possibly life-changing, one learns some things. And also, I said I would write a blog for 100 days in a row and this is what I have to talk about at this moment in time. So that’s what’s going to happen.

I will only mention one lesson I took away from today and that is, celebrate your little successes. I had 16 hours and 24 minutes on my map this morning when I left my apartment. When you look at all of that you think, “Awesome…it’s 5:30am now and that puts me getting to my stop at midnight.” Not very exciting, right? That’s a veryyyy long day. And all of it in a car! But I decided at the beginning of my trip that I was going to celebrate every time I hit under another hour. So every time I got another hour under my belt – “Woo hoo! Under 13 hours left!!!” when the map hit 12 hours and 59 minutes. I would verbally yell it and CELEBRATE! And I would think for a moment (only a few moments!) about how nice it is going to be when I get to climb in bed and go to sleep tonight. Then I would look out at the big, beautiful sky and revel in it’s magnificence.

This sounds exaggerated, but it’s not. Because…why not?! Let’s celebrate our little wins and then look at our present and be grateful. Back and forth, back and forth. That’s a beautiful life.

And that’s all for me today. Up and at ‘em bright and early tomorrow for another trip and another experience to have more discoveries. Yay!
