The other day I was in the shower after exercising thinking about who-knows-what and I realized I had been awake for about an hour and a half and hadn’t said a word. I decided to talk out loud to myself. To be honest I don’t even remember what I said. Maybe “I’m talking out loud to myself”. Something along those lines. Kind of like an experiment, making sure that nothing catastrophic would happen. I’m weird, what can I say? Have you ever had this moment?
As I said some words out loud, it felt really good and it brought me back to the things I’ve studied through self-development. “Wait, I think this can really help me in a positive way,” I thought. That whole morning as I was making breakfast and getting ready for work, I would blurt something out like “I can do this!” although I didn’t know what “this” was. Still experimenting. I did it a few more times during the day, then I decided to do some research on how it could actually help me get things done and, of course, level up! Here’s what I found –
You can use talking to yourself out loud as a verbal visualization.
An article on Today.com speaks on the many benefits of talking to yourself out loud. One interesting thing I found is that when people are trying to find something, like their missing car keys or a contact, when they say it out loud, a visual of the object forms in their mind and makes it easier to find. However, what if we aren’t looking for car keys or a contact? I’d like to take this a little further. What if you want to see yourself as successful? Or confident? Say it out loud! Form a vision of yourself being successful, whatever that means to you. Driving in that white Mercedes convertible, living in a mansion with a pool and a beautiful outlook on the city, going to work at your office where you employ others to bring your vision to life. Now say it all out loud. It might seem silly or scary at first. You also might get chills because you believe it so much! But keep saying it! Make it a practice that you do and slowly but surely you will “find” what you’re “looking” for. Manifest that ish!
If you want to focus on specific thoughts, talk them out loud.
We tend to have over 50,000 thoughts each day and yet we are taught by teachers of success over and over again to FOCUS. HA! Well, speaking out loud is actually a practice we can adopt to focus on the right thoughts of those 50,000. Instead of trying to keep the negative thoughts out (which are about 70-80% of them), we have to speak the thoughts we WANT to tend to, out loud. This is especially important when our brain is going haywire. I know I’ve had moments, a lot of times when I need to make a decision, where my brain cannot stop going. “I don’t know what I should do. What should I do? Should I hang out with friends? Should I stay in? Should I apply to this job? Is this job right for me?” STOP. And don’t just stop – say it out loud! “STOP!” Take a breath. Now say out loud what you want to think. “I know what to do. I am going to stay in tonight because I want to rest. I will apply to this job because I like the benefits, the perks, and the job description.” Well look-ee there, you focused and made a decision. Now you can move forward with your life!
You subconscious mind is where all your deeply ingrained beliefs are stored and talking out loud accesses it.
Daniel Dennett, an American philosopher, writer, and cognitive scientist explains that the subconscious was made for us to have internal self-talk. This is to keep us safe, so if we want to say something out loud that can be hurtful to others, or ourselves and our circumstances, we can just keep the thought inside our heads. But speaking them out loud causes us to use the muscles of the mouths which triggers the ears, which then goes into the brain and triggers our subconscious! While the conscious mind is a space in which we are presently aware, the subconscious mind is a storage space for all the things we aren’t aware of, but can be aware of if we need them (Source). For instance, you are offered a job that you feel is way out of your league. Your awareness one second prior to that offer was not thinking “No way! I’m not good enough for that awesome job,” but because of what you have believed before, your subconscious pushes those thoughts to your conscious mind. So know that, by saying positive and motivational phrases or actions out loud to yourself on a daily basis, you could change your most inner thoughts and beliefs about yourself! Very powerful!
As far as guarantees and value, the power of your voice is essentially unmeasurable in both directions – negative or positive – but like anything else, you can always try! So do it! Try for a day to speak to yourself out loud on what you want to see and experience, what you want to focus on, and what you want to believe in for different aspects of your life. Your body is a TOOL to create the life you want! Use it!
Now, go find a place that’s quiet and private and say some good things to yourself. OUT LOUD! ❤
You are powerful. You are purposeful. I can’t wait to see what you can do. ❤
