3 Life Lessons from Michelle Butler

Written by:

Michelle has been through a lot – many good experiences, but also many experiences that have been very difficult. And I truly believe that all of us have some of the same story in one way or another and the most important thing as human beings is to share our stories so they can help others. During our conversation on the Level Up! podcast (listen HERE), Michelle had so many great lessons to learn from. Here are my three favorite.

1. Know What You Want

Michelle was so clear on what she wanted in her career. She had two parents living on the east coast, both with terminal illnesses, while she was living in Los Angeles, a place she really wanted to be. While working at the well-known retail store Lulu Lemon, she knew she needed to make more money. A lot more money. While working at Lulu Lemon, she was also building a business for nutrition and she realized she really didn’t have the skills needed to run a booming business. So she decided she wanted to get sales experience. Staying in the health and wellness realm she got a job at the high-end gym, Equinox, selling memberships, to eventually becoming a medical sales rep and making over 6 figures! This journey didn’t come without some practice though. She meditated, did yoga, practiced positive self-talk, wrote down her goals, and visualized A LOT!

Sometimes we know certain things work – like mediation, goals, visualization, etc. – but we need to hear it from someone who has ACTUALLY done the work and gotten the result! That’s why I loved hearing Michelle’s journey. She didn’t just wish to have more money, spend time on the couch watching TV just KNOWING that money was coming to her if she was patient. No! She put in the time to do her OWN work, developing her self-belief, confidence, and what she wanted her future to look like!

2. Know Your Worth

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

She said her dad gave her a great piece of advice – “walk in the place like you own it!” She found that kind of funny because she knew her dad as such an introvert. But when it came to doing business, he was in his element!

I’m sure you’ve heard that phrase before and I want to take it a little bit further. When someone says “walk in the place like you own it,” have you actually felt it? Have you actually thought of what it would feel like if you owned the place you were walking in to to interview or to sell something? The feeling that the building, the chairs, the employees, all of that came from a thought in YOUR HEAD. You have pride in that place. A confidence that you couldn’t get anywhere else. Now keep that feeling with you and go kill that presentation!

3. Don’t Take Things Personally

In sales, you have to learn how to take rejection and move on. When Michelle would have a bad call, someone would yell at her, or have a bad interaction, she would have to gather herself. She said she would come home after a day at work, take deep breaths and remind herself that she was still a good person, that interaction was not personal towards her, and that tomorrow is a new day.

I believe gathering yourself after a long day is very essential to your well-being. And then even more if you are in a job that’s customer facing where you could be called names or have negative interactions. I have faced that through many situations working in the food service industry. And although I did get over customers yelling at me about their steak being cooked wrong or their latte had too much foam, I didn’t have those positive affirmations to bring me back to the ground. I love that Michelle shared those!

I hope you enjoyed these three lessons I pulled together. She shares many more in our episode! Listen HERE! Or watch HERE!
