You want to build a website? Well, you gotta learn how to code first, right? You want to write a movie? You should probably know how the format of a movie script…right? Oh what about building a business? You should probably know accounting, marketing, hiring, and more first, right?? WRONG! Before creating something, you have to know one thing – what you want to create. Too many people get stuck on the idea that you have to know everything about something before you can start to make progress on it and that is completely false! This is just one of the big ideas Jake talks about in our Level Up! episode!
Before Jake created WE Improv, a community of improvisers taking workshops and performing in weekly shows, Jake only knew that whatever schedule he was running wasn’t working for him and definitely wasn’t going to pay the bills. He took one small step into creating an improv workshop consisting of two classes and before he knew it, three classes were created and sold-out. Since then, WE Improv has donated over $10,000 to different non-profits around Los Angeles and the country (ie. National Bailout, No Us Without You). Jake attributes WE Improv’s success to people telling him what he should provide and him providing it. You gotta listen to the people!
We also talk about his start in education and how that has helped him as a performer and an improv coach. He has had great success (and fun!) as a co-host of The Meat Improv podcast travelling the country and Europe showcasing their great improv and comedy skills. Jake also co-hosts a comedy show called We’re Gross where, in some shows, he gets completely naked on stage like it’s nothing. And he’s got a book coming out soon called “Training To Be Myself”. There were so many things to cover in the episode; I can guarantee it is jam packed with great stories and great ways to level up.
