I have a confession – I’m not a huge superhero fan. But please, superhero fans, stay with me. There’s not anything wrong with them, but I find it’s a little hard to relate. I listened to a podcast the other day and found out that Spiderman is the most watched superhero out of all of them. Do you know why? Because he’s relatable. He doesn’t have any fancy cars or tools and he isn’t the most handsome and charming. (But I get it, Tom Holland is hot…). Stan Lee, creator of Spiderman even says about Peter Parker that he “wanted the character to be a very human guy, someone who makes mistakes, who worries, who gets acne, has trouble with his girlfriend, things like that”. Great call Stan.
Anyway, I didn’t say all that just to state that I’m not a fan the superhero culture, but more to say that us “normal” people…WE are the superheros. Wait, who? Me? Someone who lives in a three bedroom apartment with two roommates, a stuffed elephant on my bed, a cabinet full of quinoa all at the age of 29? (That’s me, by the way, just being real). Even a twenty-six year old who works two or three jobs at a time, lives in a studio apartment with a roommate, and performs comedy, unpaid, until 2am is a superhero? (That was me 3 years ago, I KEEP IT REAL Y’ALL!). The answer to both of those questions is YES.
I do have one more reservation about superheros; as much as Spiderman is relatable, in order for his superpowers to come to fruition, he gets bit by a spider. An outside source gives him all his power. Have you gotten bit by an insect and taken on their powers? I doubt it! See! That ain’t you! Good news though – you are MUCH stronger than Spiderman. YOUR super powers come from YOU! Congratulations!
Everything and everyone was put on here for a PURPOSE. A very SPECIAL purpose. Me, for example, I LOVE personal development and seeing people achieve their dreams, even if it’s just to stop eating cookies. I also LOVE comedy. AND music! AND Parks and Recreation! Ok PnR is not really part of my superpower, but my fingers just typed it because of my obsession over it. Anyway, there are hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of people out there talking about personal development. There are the same amount, if not more, COMEDIANS out there doing their thing, telling their jokes, making their funny faces and all that – that’s what comedians do, right? But guess what those thousands of other people CAN’T do? They can’t tell my jokes. They can’t share my ideas that come through the experience I live. There’s NO WAY! Because they AREN’T ME!
I want you to understand that YOU have a very special purpose here – a SUPERPOWER! I don’t care if it’s being the best weed wacker in town or the next CEO of Bubble Incorporated (don’t know if that’s a real company). There is no outside force, no technologically savvy iron or bird costume or bracelet or spandex that’s going to give you your powers. You have to look inside yourself for them, you have to own them, and most importantly, you HAVE to USE THEM. Don’t wait any longer. The world is waiting for your superpowers.
